A business term loan is a lump sum repaid in scheduled installments of principal and interest over a fixed term, suited to build-outs, expansion and other one-time projects. Starway Business Loans, a small-business funding broker in Valdosta, GA, explains amortization, balloon payments, covenants and early payoff, and introduces requests to lending partners that decide and set terms.

What a term loan is for
A term loan pays for something big and specific: fitting out a leased unit, adding exam rooms, opening a second location, buying out a partner or refinancing more expensive debt. You receive the money once, at the start, and repay it on a schedule that does not change unless the contract says it can.
That makes it different from a line of credit, which you draw on repeatedly, and from working capital, which bridges a short gap. A business line of credit suits costs that recur; a term loan suits a cost that happens once.
Who in Lowndes County, GA tends to need one
Term loans are most common among businesses that have outgrown their first setup. In Lowndes County, 389 employer establishments had 10 to 19 employees and 304 had 20 to 49 in 2023 (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Firms in that range are the ones adding space, equipment and locations.
Practices are a good example. The county had 271 ambulatory health care employer establishments in 2023, including 98 physician offices and 39 dental offices. An added operatory or a larger suite is a classic term loan project, usually paired with equipment financing for the chairs and imaging. Restaurants follow a similar pattern when they rebuild a kitchen; financing a commercial kitchen in Valdosta, GA walks through it.
Amortization in plain words
Amortization describes the way every payment divides between interest and principal. On a standard amortizing loan, the payment stays the same but the mix changes: early payments are mostly interest, later ones mostly principal, and the balance reaches zero on the last payment.
To see the effect, try the term loan calculator. Enter an amount, a rate and a term and it shows the monthly payment, the total interest and the total repaid. Lengthening the term lowers the payment but raises the total interest, which is the trade-off every borrower weighs.
Balloon payments, covenants and early payoff
- Balloon payment. Some commercial loans amortize over a long schedule but end sooner, leaving a large final payment. Plan how you would pay or refinance it before signing.
- Covenants. These are promises in the contract, such as keeping a minimum cash balance, sending financial statements or not taking on other debt without consent. Breaking one can count as a default even if every payment was made.
- Paying off early. Many agreements allow it, but some charge for it or keep interest that was built in up front. Ask how an early payoff is calculated and get the answer in writing.
- Security and guarantees. Partners commonly take a lien on business assets and ask owners for a personal guarantee.
None of these is unusual, and none is a reason to avoid a term loan. They are reasons to read the whole agreement, schedules included, and to ask the partner to explain any clause you cannot restate in your own words. A covenant you did not notice at signing is far harder to deal with two years into the term than a question asked before the first payment.
What partners usually review
- The project: a contractor's bid, a lease, a seller's quote or a written plan.
- Business tax returns and recent financial statements, for larger requests.
- Recent bank statements and existing debt.
- The owner's credit history and stake in the project.
- How the business expects the project to pay for itself.
